Choosing the perfect color palette for your home is a crucial step in creating an inviting and cohesive interior. As a Melbourne-based interior designer working with busy homeowners, I understand the importance of this process. Let’s explore how to bring colour into your interior in a thoughtful way that reflects your personality and creates a beautiful aesthetic.
- Start with Inspiration: Begin by finding inspiration from various sources. Pinterest, design magazines, and even nature can be great starting points. Pay attention to colors that resonate with you and make you feel comfortable.
- Consider the Mood: Different colours evoke different emotions. For instance, soft blues and greens can create a calming atmosphere, while bold reds and yellows can be energizing. Think about the mood you want to establish in each room.
- Understand Lighting: Lighting plays a significant role in how colours appear in your home. Natural light can bring out the true colours, while artificial light can alter them. Test paint samples in different lighting conditions to make an informed choice
- Create a Cohesive Flow: Aim for a harmonious flow of colours throughout your home. This doesn’t mean every room should be the same colour, but there should be a connection between the colours used in different spaces so that each space feels connected. Consider using a consistent undertone in your palette to tie everything together.
- Choose a Dominant Colour: Select a dominant colour that will be the primary theme throughout your home. This colour can be used in larger quantities and set the tone for your interior. Following the 60/30/10 rule in colour development, we look to incorporate one singular dominant colour thus 60% to majority of the interior for example the primary backdrop to the scheme. This can be reflected in the wall colour/ carpet & flooring and large key furniture pieces. Then we introduce the 30% secondary colour which add visual depth and interest while complementing the overall look. This secondary colour will be a tonal gradient to the main colour. And finally we add the 10% accent colour which is reflected in decor pieces and styling such as accent cushions, smaller furniture pieces-side tables for example which add fun and another layer to your interior.
- Test Paint Samples: Never underestimate the power of paint samples. Most paint stores offer small sample pots that you can try on your walls. This allows you to see how the colour looks in your space and under different lighting conditions. This is certainly true for white paints as with so many to choose from; how they present in your room will differ based on your location, sun infiltration etc. It is so important to test first before you delve into hiring the painters!
- Consider Your Lifestyle: Your colour choices should reflect your lifestyle. If you have young children or pets, you might want to consider more durable and stain-resistant colours. If you’re an empty nester, you have more flexibility in your choices.
- Personal Touch: Don’t be afraid to infuse your personality into your colour palette. If you have a favorite colour, find ways to incorporate it. Personal touches can make your home feel unique and truly yours.
- Seek Professional Advice: As an interior designer, I work with many clients in finalising their interior colour palettes for their dream home and not just in paint selections but also, carpet, flooring, tiles, stone bench tops through to joinery finishes and more….choosing a considered and balanced palette is key to delivering a stylish and loved home. It’s important that all finishes complement each as this creates that warm ,calming and relaxed feel.

Remember that choosing a colour palette for your home is a personal and creative process. Take your time, experiment, and trust your instincts. With careful consideration and a touch of your unique style, you can create a home that reflects your personality and exudes a cohesive and beautiful aesthetic
